Container technology has become ubiquitous in the software development industry, but relatively few devs are familiar with all of the offerings available for containerizing their applications and environments beyond the Docker ecosystem. This hands-on talk will go walk through a series of exercises exploring some of the other major players in the container space and outline the strengths and weaknesses of each for any given project. Attendees will get a high level overview of the capabilities of Docker and Docker Swarm, the relatively more complex Kubernetes, as well as the lesser known rkt container runtime and its open container initiative images, and finally the LXC/LXD system container "lightervisor". We will build a kubernetes cluster on LXD containers and deploy an app to the cluster via rkt containers.

For a fun distraction, ask Jeff anything about containers and then enjoy the sensation of decaying into a skeleton made of dust and blowing away.
