"Superpowers" And "Kryptonite"
Everyone we meet knows something we don't, and everyone we meet needs something WE know. In this speedy intro, I use the example of two cognitive conditions -- synesthesia and prosopagnosia -- that both bolster and limit me. By heightening our awareness of the "superpowers" and "Kryptonite" that everyone carries each day, we heighten our empathy as consultants and human beings.

Speed To Value: Lessons From The Drum Stalk
Speed to Value: Lessons from the Drum Stalk

In 2007, I went to 5-time Grammy winner Victor Wooten's Bass and Nature Camp. I spent a week with 60 other bassists to learn from the best. The very first lesson was on speed. If you want to accomplish a goal quickly, you must act with focus and safety. Haste is not speed. The faster you try to go, the longer it is going to take.

Keeping It Comfy: How I Maintain A Consistent Dev Environment
As consultants, we hop from project to project, machine to machine, OS to OS. What does a developer want when getting set up on a new machine? A comfy, familiar environment of course! In this talk I will describe a solution I created to address that problem: a unix-like utility that manages my dotfiles for me. Whenever I set up a new machine, I clone my dotfiles repo and use my dotfiles manager utility to create a predictable, updatable, consistent environment for maximum comfiness.

Craftsmanship And Craft Beer: Why Your Bud Light Got Thrown Away
Ok, you may have heard stories. You may have experienced this firsthand. There is a cry of utter anguish followed by something like, "Who the #$!! brought this into the Forge!?!??!??"

There's a reason why I react this way when someone brings mass-produced light lager into one of our Forges. It's off-brand. And the reason it's off-brand is that it's anti-craftsmanship. Come to this lightning talk to learn more about the intersection of software craftsmanship and craft brewing. You'll never look at a fizzy-almost-yellow-tasteless-beverage the same way again.

RSA Animate's illustrated video talks have always fascinated me. I wondered if it would be possible for me to do something similar. Using Procreate on an iPad Pro with an Apple Pencil, followed by iMovie post-processing on an MacBook Pro allowed me to come close.

DevOops Is A Way Of Life
DevOops is not a role.
DevOops is not a project.

DevOops is a way of life.

DevOps is all the rage right now, but most of the situations we walk into for "DevOps projects" could be more accurately called DevOops. This introduction to DevOops will walk you through some of the funny, some of the sad, and some of the baffling operations decisions I've seen on client projects.

Then, I'll propose ways to make them worse, because that's what DevOops is.

And, oh yeah, maybe ways to make them better too, if there's time.
